Arranging a Funeral

Generally speaking, funerals normally take place within one to two weeks after the person has died. However, depending on the religious circumstances, the time between the deceased and funeral can be much shorter. Before arranging a funeral, check the decease Will to see if they have a funeral plan in place.

Below is a list of things to consider when arranging a funeral:

  • Place and time of funeral

  • Cost/Budget

  • Type of service

  • Burial or Cremation

What to do when a loved one dies

Whether its sudden, planned or natural causes, its always a difficult time for the family. Depending on the circumstances, the procedure on what to do changes.

  • Home - You will need to contact their GP or the NHS as soon as possible.

  • Hospital - The hospital staff should take care of the first part of the procedure. Contacting the Doctor in charge to verify the death and obtain a medical certificate.

  • Care Home - The care home staff should take care of the first part of the procedure. The death will need to be verified by a GP and medical practitioner in order to obtain a medical certificate.

  • Abroad - You will need to register your loved one death in the country they passed away.

Registering the death

This will need to be done in the first 5 days unless you are in Scotland (8 days). You will need to contact the registrar office in the area of where the deceased passed away and make a appointment.

You will need the medical certificate when attending your appointment. Once the appointment is complete, the registrar should provide you with the following:

  • Green GRO21 Certificate which allows a burial or cremation to take place.

  • Certificate of registration of death

  • Death certificate which you will need to pay for,

Who to inform

Below are a list of a few people and organisations that should be contacted as soon as possible:

  • Family and friends

  • Employer (if working)

  • Funeral Director/company (of your choosing)

  • Mortgage/Landlord provider

  • Financial (Banks, Credit card company)

  • Pension provider

As well to this, you will also need to notify all government organisations.

This will be one of the first things you will need to begin the process for the deceased. If they have passed away at an Hospital/care home, the hospital/care home will give you the certificate. If at home, call their GP.

Obtaining the medical certificate will only be delayed if there is a Corona inquest. Which is a legal inquiry.
